Cooling Through the Blackout
During a sweltering July afternoon in 2004, a cascading grid failure knocked out power across the Stonecrest Mall District, including Turner Hill. The air hung thick and still—no fans, no AC—and storefronts grew dark as customers fled the rising heat. Local shops faced spoiled inventory and lost revenue, with no end to the outage in sight. For residents just blocks away in Turner Hill’s brick ranch homes, the stakes were even more personal: elderly neighbors, medications needing refrigeration, and no relief from the 95-degree indoor temps.
We rolled in with a 100kW mobile generator unit within two hours, running cable through the service alley to power three key storefronts and a nearby home on Evans Mill Road. Our EGSA-certified crew bypassed the damaged transformer feed temporarily, prioritizing medical-grade refrigeration and point-of-sale systems. By nightfall, cold air returned, lights flickered back on, and the pharmacy resumed dispensing temperature-sensitive prescriptions. The neighborhood stayed safe, and business losses stopped mounting.
Jamal’s team had my store cooled and running before my ice cream even melted—lifesaver during that heatwave.
